17th Annual Frankenmuth Dog Bowl to Attract Hundreds of Competing Dogs

The Frankenmuth Dog Bowl, known as the biggest Olympic-style event for dogs, will take place in Michigan’s “Little Bavaria” on Memorial Day weekend.

The festival, now in its 17th year, will be held at Frankenmuth River Place Shops, and will feature various events, including DockDogs and Disc Dogs of Michigan competitions, border collie sheep-herding displays, a pet parade and costume contest, trick contests, and doggie fun run races, according to a news release from the Frankenmuth Dog Bowl.

The Frankenmuth Dog Bowl, the world’s largest Olympic-style festival for dogs, is returning to Michigan’s “Little Bavaria” on Memorial Day weekend, May 27-28.

It is anticipated to attract more than 100,000 visitors, and the majority of events are free, but some require a registration fee, such as the annual canine cruise on the Cass River. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a 6-foot leash.

Michael Zehnder, the owner of Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn Inc., stated that his events team had put in significant efforts to provide a secure and pleasant experience for all visitors and their dogs. He added that he was excited about the return of Bavarian Inn’s Memorial Day weekend celebrations and looking forward to a fun weekend.

As a part of the Frankenmuth Dog Bowl festival, there will be an additional event called Balloons Over Bavarian Inn, which will have around 25 hot air balloon pilots from different states. There will be morning and evening competitions, as well as nightly balloon glows at River Place Shops throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

A special event called Balloon Glow Village will also be available where visitors can see the hot air balloons illuminate and communicate with pilots and their teams from 9 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth fireworks show will mark the end of the 2023 Frankenmuth Dog Bowl festival on Sunday at 9:45 p.m., and can be seen from various parts of Frankenmuth, with the best view from the large field to the east of River Place Shops.
